Community Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year Award

Award Description

The education of pharmacy students continues to shift away from the classroom and into real world practice sites. Practicing pharmacists are increasingly being called on to serve as preceptors for students as experiential education accounts for nearly one third of the total pharmacy curriculum. These preceptors play an invaluable role in educating, developing and mentoring future healthcare providers.

With Apotex's support, the NACDS Foundation has established an award to recognize a pharmacy preceptor who has made significant contributions to the education of pharmacy students through Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotations in a community pharmacy setting.

These contributions could include:

  • Offering an advanced, cutting-edge experiential rotation that uniquely trains students to provide patient care services,
  • Serving as an effective teacher and role model for community practice, providing exemplary mentorship, and inspiring students to be better patient advocates, or
  • A combination of accomplishments that have enhanced student pharmacist education and ultimately patient care.

Nature of the Award

The community pharmacy preceptor chosen for this award will receive a $5,000 stipend, given to the school/college of pharmacy of choice designated by the award recipient to fund future patient care projects or research. The recipient will receive a travel stipend to cover round trip, coach class airfare, two nights lodging, as well as complimentary registration to attend the NACDS Pharmacy & Technology Conference, where the recipient will be publicly recognized during an award presentation.

In addition to the first place recipient, two runners-up may be selected as "Shining Stars." The preceptors receiving this distinction will be awarded a certificate to recognize their achievement and a $1,000 stipend given to the school/college of pharmacy of his or her choice.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominee must serve as a preceptor at a U.S. college or school of pharmacy with ACPE candidate or full accreditation status, and have precepted a minimum of three (3) APPE students in the previous year.
  • Nominee is an advocate for patient care initiatives in preceptor education.
  • Nominee precepts APPE students at a U.S. community pharmacy practice site.
